Ignition interlock devices mean tougher DUI laws in MS

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX)- More and more ignition interlock devices are being used for DUI offenders. Its a device that keeps a car from starting, if a driver has had too much alcohol.

Mississippi is joining the list of states that use the device.

On Highway 53, almost six years ago, one man's nightmare came true.

"She came around the curve with no headlights, 80 miles per hour," said Bill Downs. "I lost my son, his wife and friend to a drunk driver."

HSSM needs to place 50 cats and kittens to make space for incoming animals

GULFPORT, MS- We are nearing the end of the Spring season and for the Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) they are in the middle of kitten season.

They are over their capacity of cats storing some in board rooms and offices.

It gets worse. They expect more animals on Monday. HSSM says those animals are coming from an emergency situation. They have few details regarding the circumstances.

They need to create room for the new cats and are asking the public to consider fostering or adopting the lovable felines.

Hundreds of students athletes get free sports physicals

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- Local physicians helped hundreds of South Mississippi high school students wanting to throw, kick or dribble a ball get the medical all clear to play.

Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists and Encore Rehabilitation gave free sports physicals to 1,400 students on Saturday for the 2014 - 2015 school year. The students attend 14 high schools in Harrison and Jackson counties. Officials said the physicals are required for all student athletes.

Gulfport company looking to hire ship builders

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX)- The building of massive barges is a big business right now, and one of the companies taking advantage of the demand is right here on the coast. It's TY Offshore on Seaway Road in Gulfport.

Friday, the company put another of those barges in the water. It's an impressive sight when 1,000 tons of steel drops into the water for the first time. As you might expect, it is always an anxious and proud moment for the builders.

"It's exciting, probably the most exciting part of the construction," CEO John Dane told WLOX News.

Debate over port job creation heating up

Port commission leaders and the Steps Coalition have very different takes on that HUD report which deals the promised job creation at the port expansion project.

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX)- Mississippi State Port Authority Commission Chairman Jim Simpson says the Steps Coalition and Mississippi Center for Justice have tried to block the port expansion project, as he puts it, "at every turn."

His remarks came at a press conference Thursday afternoon to address a HUD report, which raises concerns about job creation at the port. Minutes after that briefing, the Steps Coalition held its own news conference.
