Judge Clark appointed to Drug Courts Advisory Committee

The Mississippi Supreme Court has appointed Circuit Judge Roger T. Clark of Gulfport to the State Drug Courts Advisory Committee.

Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. signed the appointment order April 8. The term is through December 2014. Judge Clark replaced Lauderdale County Court Judge Veldore Young on the Advisory Committee.

Two 18-year-olds charged in attempted auto burglary

Harrison County Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said deputies arrested Cody Denise Husband, 18, of Gulfport and Diamonte Smith-Robinson, 18, on Saturday in connection to an attempted auto burglary.

Their arrests came after deputies responded to a possible auto burglary in the area of Summer Haven Subdivision.

Deputies later spotted Husband driving a black Acura with Smith-Robinson and two juveniles. Brisolara said an investigation revealed that both Husband and Smith-Robinson were involved in an attempted auto burglary.

Gulfport caregiver charged with exploitation of vulnerable adult

A Gulfport woman faces a charge of exploitation of a vulnerable adult after she allegedly used the victim's credit card to purchase merchandise.

Forty-three-year-old Aretha D. Dillon of the 300 block of 32nd Street Gulfport was arrested Saturday, according to Biloxi police Sgt. Donnie G. Dobbs.

Dillon was reportedly working as the victim's caregiver when she allegedly used the quadriplegic's credit card. Dobbs said she purchased $645.80 worth of merchandise on the victim's card for her own personal use.

Gulfport woman injured after shooting; shooter still at large

A Gulfport woman in her 50s took one gunshot to her upper body Saturday night and her shooter is still at large, according to Gulfport Police Sgt. Matt Thomas.

Thomas said the shooting happened outside around 8 p.m. in front of a home at the 1200 block of 43rd Avenue.

Police investigating an unrelated incident in the area reportedly heard the gunshot. Once they arrived on the scene the suspect had already fled.

Thomas said there were witnesses. The victim was transported to an area hospital for superficial injuries. She has been released.

Teen allegedly dines at Mexican eatery before robbing it

Gulfport Police Deputy Chief Leonard Papania said, a 14-year-old faces one count of armed robbery after allegedly robbing a Mexican restaurant on Friday.

Papania said the robbery happened at 9:07 p.m. at Lupita's Mexican Restaurant located at 2330 East Pass Road in Gulfport.

The teen reportedly had just finished eating at the restaurant when he pulled out a handgun and demanded money. He then fled the scene on foot, Papania said.

Gulfport man gets 40 years for child abuse

On Thursday, a Harrison County jury found Daniel Wayne Byers, 26, of Gulfport guilty of two counts of felony child abuse, according to District Attorney Joel Smith.

Smith said Harrison County Circuit Court Judge Larry Bourgeois sentenced Byers to forty years in prison.

An investigation into Byers began September 4, 2011. Byers brought a 2-year-old girl, who was in severe pain, to an emergency room at Garden Park Hospital at around 2:45 a.m.
